If you look at /etc/passwd, the third field (delimited by ':') is the
user id - for root, it is 0, the id of the super user. You can add other
users with id of 0 and they will have all the privileges of root.
In olden days :-) it was common to have a "cshroot" account for those
administrators who preferred csh to the (then common) /bin/sh that was
the default for root... but, it could easily be extended to any
combination of home directories, shells, etc.
