  I use americast---cable ----and there are two different
setups depending on the modem. One type is for a static
IP--which you would have to configure(subnet--gateway etc)
and the other is dhcp--.You will have to determine(ask)
which type you have and then set-up accordingly. Here at my
house we have both types---mine is static and the one my
wife uses for work is dhcp.
If you need any additional info either contact me offlist
or verizon(they will tell you they dont support linux---but
will provide all the necessary info)

modem you /she has, sorry.
