the solution I use for this is

A box setup to use fetchmail to grab all my mail run it through procmail
for my mailing list filtering. It is also running SSHd so that I can ssh
into it from anywhere and use PINE ( my prefered email client). It is
also running an IMAP server on the internal network so that from my laptop
and my main desktop I can use PINE to read my email but it always remains
on the one machine.
