It's a VERY bad thing. I've opened those images lots and lots of times,
on systems with less RAM/swap. It almost sounds like bad RAM issues for
you. The very worst that *should* have happened is that the gimp would
crash. I can think of nothing that would make your system reboot just
because the gimp ran out of memory, unless there are hardware issues.
