Actually, I've got a desktop background called xplanet that I dearly love.
It's a flat view of the earth, and it's dynamic: it changes with the day.
There's a shadow that goes where the night is, and in the shadow you see the
nighttime view of earth, with all of the lights of industrialized earth.
