There is a way to import other bitmaps into the xplanet program for use
as the texturemap for the globe. You should be able to find some nice
super hi-res (heh) photos of earth in the Bluemarble stuff, and there
are also some good photos of mercury, venus and mars on there somewhere.

Make your own Mars landmarks and import a good bitmap of the surface of
mars and run that as your background!
