Scott, you're fantastic. Thanks a million!

For posterity's sake, let me also recommend the Linuxcare bootable
rescue CD -- it'll automatically mount all your partitions if you ask it
to, which makes things a lot easier. But I suspect I wouldn't have done
as well without your suggestion to use chroot.
