I've been hearing nothing but good about gandi.net for a long time, and
you can't beat the price.
Nothing wrong with register.com, but why spend extra? My own domain
names are currently split between http://discountdomainregistry.com and
http://domaindirect.com/, but I think I'll probably move them to gandi
before long.
Besides price, the main thing to look for in a registrar IMO is easy
administration (point at a new host right away, automated online
process, etc.) and gandi's is as easy as any around.
And yes, Verisign sucks and should be avoided.
