Sounds like an MDK specific problem. I've been using Evolution for over 6 mos (On RH 7.1, then 7.2, now 7.3) and it hasn't ever caused any problems much less caused one that required a reboot. It sounds to me like X is getting hung up. I'd say that Evolution isn't broken, MDK is.

IMHO, any piece of software that requires a Linux power down doesn't work.
Can you get out to a different terminal (alt+Fn) to just kill it?
