I used to get that dead keyboard when X locked up and I found that my
keyboard file was not populated. That took care of the issue for me. Now I
don't ever get locked up or have a dead keyboard.

But that is with RH7.1.

Sounds like an X server problem, I have one just like it now using CVS
XFree, my computer enters a locked state until I eject my pccards whenever I
leave X.
