What I did next was to get a big drive, switch to using grub as boot
manager and started installing many (10) O/S's on my computer. Now I
could test drive each one of them without having to loose any work.

If you start with RH you get grub as default. Then skip installing any
boot managers. I have a common swap for Linux, a boot partition for
each and then a data partition.
