First a couple of things. Have you tried to flash and update the Bios?
Next as Jim Lange asked what size power supply as you should have a amd
approved 400watt power supply AMD's use a ton of power.
Next are both the Red Hat and XP loaded with SMP support turned on?
Have you checked your Ram to make sure you dont have a bad Dimm module?
Have you also check www.amd.com to see if the processors are approved from
AMD to run as Dual rather then the Mother Board manufacture.
Though Tyan Make the Board does not mean it us even AMD approved for such
system.
Also I am sure if you use Red Hat 7.3 you would have less problems you have
to remember the age of 7.1 at that time The Dual Amd's were just comming
out.
In fact the Tyan Board was just out less then a year ago. The Verson of Red
Hat was out 2 years ago.
It is a good rule of thumb to always Check Compat List, Check for updates
Bios Drivers etc., Make Sure the componets do not have Compatiablity Issues
with each other. Such as ATI Radeon All In Wonder 7500 with ALI Chipsets and
VIA chip sets. Make sure the Power Supplys meet the Mother Boards and CPU's
Specs by checking the web site of each.
Also there is Issues with Rambus Memory and AMD's and especially on certain
other boards. AMD recommends DDR!
This is where check and re-check are your friends then always check HCL's
Hard Ware Compatability List of the Os's.
I know you said that 7.1 was not showing it to be on the list did you check
7.2 and 7.3 Red Hat list ?
My Rule of thumb Again Check Bios updates 1st. Check Os Updates. Then Driver
Updates.
How ever since you also said Both Os's Lock I would suspect Ram, CPU also
Heat on the CPU's AMD's use the best you can afford! Then Check the Ram and
then Power Supply. With {cough} Windows make sure you have loaded the Mother
Board Chip set Updates for ALI , Via etc., Also maybe Re Compile the Kernel
to optimize the machine.
I hope this helps you out to a point to find the problem.
Also sometimes you can not always trust HCL's if some things are not listed
could mean not compatiable or not tested! Depends on how much do they still
update the List. As I mentioned since both OS's do this it most likely is
HardWare.
Good Luck.
