I have the same problem with my windows server sometimes. I'm not sure
what it is, but your not alone. Since I don't do much of that it is no
big deal. What happens the my windows server is this: The system becomes
a massive resource hog, and decides to cause trouble. I would suggest
using something like ftp (yes across a LAN) to copy any large files.
Thus far, that's worked for me.

I have a Windows98 machine that can take up wards of 1 hour to copy a
100 meg file across the network. At first I suspected it was the windows
machine. But if I use pscp to copy a file from the windows98 machine to
my Linux server it's fast under a min. The server has a 10/100 Ethernet
net card the Windows machine a 100 Ethernet card. But if I copy the same
file from the Windows machine to my Linux desktop machine it can take up
wards of 1 hour to copy a 100 meg file. The desktop machine has a 10/100
Ethernet card in it.
Then I thought maybe it was a hub or cable problem. But since I can copy
files from my Linux Desktop to the Linux server just fine, I've ruled
that out. So being at a loss as to where this problem may be. Is there
any software that can maybe help pinpoint where this problem lies? Any
suggestions on what to look for would also be appreciated. This is not a
large network. Just a small home network with 6 machines on the net 2
Windows and 4 Linux. I haven't tried to copy files from the Linux
desktop to the Windows machine but running VNC seems really show
considering my desktop is a 1.2 Gig with a nvida 3d graphics card. I
would think the screen redraws would be much faster than they are. It
also seems the file start out copying fine. The first 24 to 40 Meg go
quick much like they should, then it slows to a craw for the remainder
of the file transfer. Also if I save a file from Say Microsoft Word to a
Samba share on the Linux desktop they will timeout before they are
saved.
