Mounting anything on a Linux box requires being root or modifying the
permissions so that one can do it without being root. In general, the
use of any peripheral device directly requires root. For example, the
only reason you can print to your printer is because you're going
through the printer daemon. But if you try and send something directly
to the printer port, you'll need to be root as well.
