You do _not_ want to build an ecommerce solution from scratch. Use one
of the free ones. I use one called commerce.cgi (Google for it). This is
based on another package called Extropia. And there's one called (I
believe) Agora, that's based on commerce.cgi. Pretty simple to set up
and run. No logins, though. The system assigns a unique number to each
session, and this is passed as a parameter any time the user changes
pages, and is used to key all their transactions. The "database" can be
done several ways, but normally it's a pipe-delimited flat file in a
subdirectory. Credit card processing requires either a handoff to
another service that does that, or you processing the cards yourself;
you get half the credit card number emailed to you, and the other half
is obtained from an admin program sitting on the website.
