I am always pleased with the way problems get resolved in the SLUG list - different approaches seem to result in a problem that is looked at by all angles - perhaps if someone needs some help with Linux in their home or workplace, we could use this forum to address that problem? -Pat

They won't. They can start out with a dart and a blind fold and end up
evaluating their options.

Yup. When folks call a SLUG for help the SLUG helper has to evaluate
the person's need and weigh it against their own abilities. We might need
to refer them to someone else. Ultimately, we end up relying on the
professionalism and judgement of the SLUGs who put their name on that
list. But, that's what we will always need to do anyway. Besides, I
don't think there are many folks looking for opportunities to go fall flat
on their faces.

Realistically, some negotiation and exploration by both sides will occur
after initial contact. The potential helper can decide that the
potentially helped is too clueless for hope and graciously pass on any
offers. Or, decide that the problem is way over their head and also pass.
The potentially helped can decide that the potential helper is unqualified
and politely, or not, decide to look elsewhere. Or, the person seeking
help who finds someone they want may decide that for $50/hour they can go
subcribe to a LUG's mailing list or RTFM.

Maybe I could be talked into how one html link under your name to give
folks a little more information when initially evaluating their options
might be a good idea. Maybe. I think Paul was trying to keep this thing
simple. Simple is good. SLUG doesn't vouch for anyone. SLUG passes no
judgement on their qualifications. SLUG is not in a position to be able
to do such things. All that page does is provide a list of people who
said they would be willing to see if they could help if someone decided
to ask them. If someone is looking for more than that, there are plenty
of good consultants and businesses around who can provide what they need.

My 2 cents,

Greg
