But LPD is likely using a generic driver, so it will print, but you are not
getting the full functionality of that printer from the generic driver.

Yes, and CUPS has been known to get corrupted by a bad install or patching.
So, I suggest you reinstall cups, cups-client, cups-libs. and cups-drivers.
Remove the old cups config, then reconfigure the printer. Be sure that the
usb modules are loaded and you don't also have a usb problem.

Remember, that StarOffice has its own printer administration. While SuSE may
support the printer, SO may only have a generic driver available.
