On most laptops I've seen, the onboard touchpad/trackpoint/whatever uses /dev/psaux. Try adding that as your mouse device entry in your XF86Config. The type will probably be PS/2. (not IMPS/2). I know the thinkpad is idiosyncratic, but it's worth a shot.
