Does it go dead right after it hits 5%, or does it keep running despite what APM says? This, I think would be the test to determine whether the battery or apm is bad.

PS - I leave my laptop plugged in all the time with the battery in. It doesn't ruin the battery in my case, seemingly because it stops charging once it hits 100% and runs off the AC power. This is a laptop (and battery) I've had for years.
