It's probably something like "because what you call a 'private' key is
really a mathematical "sub-key" of the public key" or somesuch
technicality.

However, I'm not a crypto-expert, so you could look around on
www.gnupg.org or www.google.com for an authoritative answer... :)

Either you cannot edit the expiration date of the private key, as that
is an inherent piece of the key itself (and once you've uploaded it to
the keyserver, you may not be able to override an expired key there) or
you need to explicitly "edit" the private key component of your
keypair. I'm almost certain it's the former.

My caveat from the first part of my response holds for this answer as
well. :)
