Yes, that is it exactly. I have reinstalled openssh on both systems and
have not had the time to check it out again,,, you know how that is !!

On my RH7.2, the file /home/larry/.ssh/id_rsa has rw access for user
and the directory: /home/larry/.ssh has permissions rwx for owner
all others are zero.
The file id_rsa does infact contain the private key.
Is this what you have?
