RE: [SLUG] A JAVA Question.

My understanding is that VisualCafe and like products
all use a standard implementation of Java as defined
by SUN. AWT is just the first GUI API. The API was a
revolutionary design but real world implementation saw
some major flaws with cross-platform functionality,
and speed issues all due to the fact that the
underlying code to render the interface relied on
platform specific code passed through the VM tagged
with a java defined "wrapper". The "wrapper" provided
a standard API and passed the calls to generate the
GUI to the system. The problem is two fold.. firstly,
it was slow; secondly, the widget set provided was
rudimentary at best. Many companies developed more
robust libraries of widgets which in turn fragmented
the development of standard libraries.. and thus SWING
was invented. SWING was implemented in Java 1.2 .. I
think.. need to look at the books again to be sure.
The SWING api is a colletion of functions.. calls that
maintain for the most part backward compatibility to
the AWT libraries but implement all that functionality
in the JVM. Nice solution.. very elegant. So to
answer your question... Visual Cafe does implement AWT
and SWING.

Thanks,
Rob
