When I was testing my serial PalmPilot and a USB Handspring with Linux I used
pilot-link <http://www.pilot-link.org/>. Perhaps it will help you diagnose
the problem given that you don't think it will sync with anything. You can
use the pilot-xfer program to debug the connection without changing the
contents of your pilot. Just an idea.
