I found the problem... I had to change the format of grub.conf from what the
documentation describes. The docs said to use:
kernel (hd0,0)/boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda3
I changed that to:
kernel (hd0,0)/bzimage root=/dev/hda3
and it works now.
