Hello everyone,

Now that the 2.6.0 kernel has hit beta status, I would like to attempt to
compile one for powerpc. However, I've already hit a few snags...

1. The tool chain doesn't appear to available for debian-woody.
2. Whenever I ask anyone about trying to compile a 2.6.0-testx, I'm told a)
the bleeding edge kernel for powerpc is 2.4.21-benh-x (ben h is the guy
maintaining the ppc port of the kernel) or b) I don't want to do this anyway,
as it's still for developers.
3. No one understands (or cares about) my opinion on the kernel compile issue
(it should build without any problem for whatever supported arch by the time
it reaches 2.6.0 status.)

Now, I know I'm going to have problems, and that's to be expected. I wonder if
I should file bug reports, but that goes back to item 2.b, because I'm not a
developer. My real concern is a repeat of what happened w/ 2.4.0, which is
(imagine booming voice from above): i386 always comes first, and the other
archs follow later on.

Linus released 2.4.0 when he realized that us ordinary folks weren't doing
basic userland-type stuff with the 2.4.0-testx kernels. I read an article
about this on the net sometime around 2.5.50, and the author was imploring
users to try it and see, just to have users screw up and let the real kernel
hackers know what's working, and what isn't, even though it was in a state
flux. Now we're in beta status...and I'm making that effort, and so far
people seem almost hostile to me doing it. I don't understand that.

I thought the linux kernel (and other FOSS) were made better by volunteers.
Here I am volunteering, and no one wants my help! Can someone explain this to
me?

Russell
