The cost per "CD" is actually slightly less, unless you have more
than 16 or 17 songs on the full CD (which is not that often). That's
given that the typical CD at the local Sam Goody or Virgin Megastore
costs about $16 (Wal-mart, around $13 - $14). That, plus a 128kbps
WMA9 file is roughly equivalent to a 160kbps MP3, which is better
than CD quality. I rarely use CDs anymore anyhow---I either tip them
to my PC to listen to, or load them on a memory stick for my Clie, or
burn a hundred or so MP3/WMA files to a CD to listen to on my MP3/WMA
CD player on the long road trips.

The iTunes service offers full CDs for $9.99, compared to the average
price of $15 for a physical disc at the local record shop.

The other advantage here is that you can download only the songs you
actually like. I've frequently purchased a CD because of one song
that came on the radio and discovered that the rest of the CD was
simply garbage. I'd rather pay 79 cents than $15 for one song.

The only thing I haven't tried yet is to see if a DMR-protected WMA
will actualy convert to an MP3 if I have the appropriate license for
the WMA. That will be necessary because my PDA only plays MP3s.
