Perl is not the ONLY way to solve your problem. It does, however, provide
a quick and easy solution that doesn't require *too* much expertise. You
could do the same thing with sh, tcl, C, Java, Python, Ruby, Haskell,
Forth, COBOL, ...

If you often have these kinds of tasks, though, it may very well be worth
your while to learn perl.

BTW, the script I included with my original reply works perfectly on the
example you posted.
