In California there's Fry's Electronics ... that was my candy store.
Not really a "mom and pop" shop, but the stores are huge themed
warehouses with dirt-cheap prices (although you had to be careful
what you got--they purchased in such bulk that a lot of the time
you'd end up buying a non-working item that you'd have to exchange,
but when you got something that did work (which was most of the time)
it's an incredible deal and worth the trouble of making and exchange
or two). If someone makes it, they carry it, especially hard-to-find
stuff.
The one in Fountain Valley was modeled like a Roman coliseum (they
got all the old arch props from Caesar's Palace when the casino
remodeled); the one in Anaheim looked like NASA's Mission Control.
