Not only is it more expensive, but you have a 2 sec delay on a satellite. 1
sec up and 1 sec down. Under some situations that can become annoying.
Your bandwidth also becomes limited.
Cable by far is the cheapest. As some people have pointed out VoIP is pretty
good. I built a VoIP PBX (voice over ip phone switch) which allows
companies to use both normal lines like B1's, T1's and Internet. My VoIP
quality coast to coast is better than land lines. Reliability is at least
as good as a cell phone.
Stick to cable for best overall Internet value. Add VoIP to make it even
more valuable. I'd get a new line for vonage though. This way you can test
it and make sure you're happy with it.
