This is a FAQ on the linux-xfs list; I don't know if it's actually "in
the FAQ" but it is a FAQ. The (very legitimate) answer is that if they
had BSD'd it, it would leave it free for Sun, Microsoft, IBM, and all of
the other of SGI's competitors to integrate the code into their own
products without any contribution back - exactly not what SGI needs
right now.
It's one of the best examples of the "correct" use of GPL I've seen,
really.
