This has been asked many of times. Perhaps this will help.

When it comes to buying a Laptop and asking which is the best makes it hard
to decide.
You will find that many of us have had good and bad luck with different
brands.

The thing I would sugguest is this. Write down what some tell you or print
it out.
Next Check the Linux Laptop site to read what has been posted. Next I would
do some research like what does the Laptop have under the skin. Next check a
few
other sites to see what others in general say about them.

After you do this and compare that you will start getting a picture of
what's going to
be best for you. Make sure you get the most bang for the buck. Make sure of
all it
is one that if you need to get additional batteries and accessories for it
that they will
be around to get them. Batteries is yet another huge part of the Laptop.

Some generics use what ever they get a deal on and sometimes can be
impossible to get
a Battery for it. How ever Names like Dell, Gateway, Compaq, and IBM you can
even buy batteries
made by APC for them at CompUsa.

There is others that have had good Luck with Sony, Toshiba, and Hp as well
as even yes E-Machines.
Again there is both good and bad with all and the good ones we favor the bad
we tell you stay away from them.

When you make that purchase remeber you are spending a fair amount of money.
I know in my book Dell, is number one. Compaq if it is the Persario Line a
few things unlike some.
Compaq has a base amout of ram made on the motherboard and most of this line
only has 1 expansion slot.
Mine has 64meg and was only able to add a 128. for a grand total of 192 megs
while that is not what I wanted
it does the job and it is the first Comapq I can say that works. If I try to
put in a 256 or even 512 it will only see
128 megs in that slot even with the most current bios update. Dianes
Latitude 512 Megs have even tried to
put in to 512's for a few from a friends Laptop it works up to 1 gig of Ram.

Anyways form an I.T. background and repairing them Dell, then IBM in my
book. IBM Thinkpads are built like tanks.
again from my experience.

Wish you the best luck on this. Sounds like a lot but it is only a little
time to get the best you can get!

Enjoy.
