No, we've had a lot of "Bad luck" with Sony laptops as well. I'd never
buy another one. Ever. Nor would I recommend them for running Linux.
Some will, some won't, some work ok, some work abysmally, some don't
work at all. We had a couple at NKS, all with hardware allegedly
supported under Linux, however when it came time to actually try to run
Linux on the things, they were so unstable as to be useless. And they
fell apart quickly.

I recently picked up a Dell 5150 amazingly cheap (about $1200 before tax
and shipping) considering it has a 3Ghz Pentium IV, 1400x1050 display
with a 64MB Radeon M9, 30GB hard drive, DVD/CD-RW, integrated 10/100
broadcom ethernet, firewire, and 384M of RAM. I haven't been able to
get a Debian install stable on it (X dies/panics a lot) but RedHat is
running superbly with the ATI binary driver, and everything works except
the winmodem, which I never use anyway.

I have a lot of good things to say about Dell laptops. As long as you
get a model that has all supported hardware, they will generally run
Linux very well.
