        check to make sure you have a line such as this in /etc/services
        
        zaphod austin $ grep "telnet" /etc/services
        telnet 23/tcp
        
        I had this error come up when I first started futzing with remote X
        sessions over VNC. The line may have been clobbered inadvertently.
