Debian uses characters from the movie Toy Story.
Sid = Development Unstable (will never become a Stable release)
Sarge = Testing (will become next Stable version)
Woody = Stable (v3.0)
Potato = Old Stable (v2.2)
...
All of the releases are more than 1 CD, though you should be able to
boot and install a base image using just the first one. If you want
frills (like a GUI), you're probably going to need the other CDs.
At the moment, I run Woody boxes with Sarge and Sid backported packages
(that I build myself). My laptop runs Sarge natively and I haven't had a
problem yet. I have a Sid UML image, which is fun, but as an unstable
developement tree it does occasionally blow up in horrible ways after an
apt-get.
