Yes, if you copy your .config from an old kernel build into your new
toplevel source directory and run `make oldconfig` , it will keep your old
settings and only ask you about new kernel features. However, I don't
know of anything that functions equivalently with a binary-only kernel, or
one where you've inadvertently removed your .config.
