[SLUG] Debian mp2 to and from ogg

Does anyone know of a good program to convert mp3's to
ogg and vice versa? I would like to archive with ogg
but my mp3 player won't play ogg so I need a way to
convert the ogg to mp3's.
I tried to compile lame for debian but for some reason
it doesn't seem to work. Crashes audacity. audacity
looks like a good choice but I really would perfer a
way to do this from the command line as I could script
it to do a large number at once. I've searched through
the apt-cache and did not come up with anything. Also
checked freshmeat but came up empty there also.

Thanks
Mike M.
