Have you tried backing up your .config then running 'make mrproper'? The
errors you're getting could indicate some stale cruft. E.g.

cd /usr/src/linux-2.4
cp .config config.save
make mrproper
cp config.save .config
make oldconfig
make dep && make clean && make bzImage
