Could you be a little more specific than "does not work"?
You might have something worth filing a Debian bug report
over.

It'd probably be easier to just do a "apt-get build-dep jpilot",
but again, depending on what "does not work", you may not
even have to go through these gyrations.

Additionally, you may want to look over the apt-get man page.
The "source" directive for apt-get should be of interest to you.
