[SLUG] kernel modules in different root?

I've made a laptop boot over a network, using an NFS-mounted / . How
would I direct the kernel modules (you know, from "make modules_install")
to use /nfs instead of /? I guess it would be considered cross-compiling.
There are drivers I need for full operation, but which I didn't have in
what I copied over (such as IDE).

Logic is a systematic method of coming to the wrong conclusion with confidence.
