RE: [SLUG] dead(?) UPS?

I have been "recovering" UPS now for quite some time.
in fact I used a "bad" one to power a pump in my wife's
bait truck until I got a solution that did not need
120 VAC.

I replaced the old batteries with deep cycle batteries
and off it went. It was a 2KVA unit also. Ran a 1/3 HP
pump to keep the bait tanks with moving water.

I would do exactly what you planned to do get the batteries
and set it up to see if it will work. You can also take
the old batteries put them on a charger and see if they
will take a charge. Charge each battery separately unless
you have a 24 or 48v charger in which case you can charge
them two by two or all 4 at the same time.

Usually what happens is the old batteries dry out or
sulfate over. At that point they are DOA particularly
if they are sealed batteries.

Subject: [SLUG] dead(?) UPS?

I have an APC SmartUPS 2000, which I got in about 1996. It had been
discarded because it had died. (From what I hear, "dead" UPSes can often
be revived by replacement of batteries.) It consists of two boxes, each
about 7"W x 8"H x 37"D, and uses four sealed-lead-acid batteries in
series, for a total of 48V DC.

My father thinks (after testing parts of the circuit) that it's well and
truly dead, and new batteries won't bring it back, but he's been known to
be pessimistic.

I replaced one battery in about 1997, but since the UPS was DOA to me,
haven't used it.

* Before I invest $100 in new batteries, why should I think that that'll
  fix this beast?

* Is the one I already replaced dead now?

I have an idea of buying the batteries locally (no shipping cost), then
returning them if the UPS fails to charge.

* Should I scrape together four car/motorcycle batteries, connect them in
series, and test the UPS with that?

* Is there anybody (locally, as it's too heavy to ship) who can check out
* the brains of the UPS, to verify its operation?
