[SLUG] Fireworks - type software

With all the talk about alternatives to Dreamweaver, I thought I might
field some suggestions for a Fireworks (free, linux) alternative. I
used to use DW and FW all the time, but I gave up pirating software
about a year ago and I can't afford a Macromedia studio license. Since
then, my web pages and graphics have suffered a little.

I've been looking for something comparable to Fireworks for some time
now. The closest thing I found is GIMP, but I don't like the user
interface. I heard the 2.0 version has a new interface, so I'll be
looking for that. Does anyone know any other similar graphics apps?
I mainly do text, and text effects. I also do some layering of text
over altered photos. But that's about the extent of it. I don't need
something as powerful as Adobe or Fireworks, but FW has, in my opinion,
the best user interface for text editing. That's why I settled on it
years ago. Now that I'm legit, I'm looking for an open source graphics app.

Any suggestions? Thanks.
