What does a "file filename.nfo" say? That program looks at the headers/content of the file for "magic" to determine what the file really is, regardless of extension. Have you looked inside, it might just be text. You can always "head filename.nfo" to look at the first few lines. If it turns out to be binary stuff that screws up your XTerm or whatever you're using, just Ctrl-C and enter the "reset" command, you should be back almost good as new :).
