I was wrong. Ashamed I am,, I am running this on RH 7.1,,, When I
moved it to the RH 8.0 box it ran just fine. Ergo,,, limitation in RH
7.1

Since it sounds like string-processing, I'd really recommend rewriting
it in Perl. It would also be a lot easier to follow the program logic
if the language is some sort of formally defined structured language
than with a bunch of weird shell commands.

If it's not terribly complicated, you might even find someone who could
just convert it. It doesn't sound like "analysing calls to phone
numbers" is a particularly complex or complicated program.
