VMware also puts the interface in promiscuous mode (in some networkong
configurations).

As a side note, I have a text-to-speech system (festival) which I feed
'interesting' lines from /var/log/messages. My mother was highly upset
when she heard it announce 'promiscuous mode enabled on eth0'. I had to
explain that I did not name it.
