Hardware works, now checking the software... doesn't appear to work. I
start taper with a tape in the drive as root as

taper -T scsi

then go to "Recreate info file", and it asks me to insert a tape in the
drive, I hit "OK", then it gives me an error "No such device while opening
backup device". These files exist:

crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 128 Aug 30 2002 /dev/nst0
crw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 0 Aug 30 2002 /dev/st0

and these are the top two modules:

sg 36204 0 (autoclean)
st 31404 0 (autoclean) (unused)

Linux sg driver version: 3.1.25
Using libscg version 'schily-0.5'

same as yours on sg... older on libscg.
