Xine should work fine:

Of course, MPlayer is good too, although I've never really liked it/needed
it (been living fine with Xine and Totem.)

*Note: Kaffeine and Totem are both based off of xine, so it might be that
(a) Xine just doesn't like you, or (b) more likely, that you simply
haven't downloaded/installed the proper codecs.
