Did you try turning on link prefetching (Preferences->Advanced->Cache)?
Problem might be latency with the server at the other end, too - to load
a page with 20 images, a browser has to make 21 http requests. So if it
takes the server a few seconds to respond to each one...
Or it might be your ISP. Does it happen with other browsers?
