For the MTA, it doesnt matter if it is a link or the binary is named
sendmail. The link or binary is named that so things such as interpreted
languages, or other binaries, can send mail via a function and be
pointed to your MTA. This computer has exim installed but a php or perl
script with mail() will still look for /lib/your/directory/sendmail
(which may or may not be a link) to work.
