You can emerge bootsplash into Gentoo, and with a little work, have it
running nicely, or boot without it. Fedora has RHGB (Red Hat Graphical
Boot) which is exceptionally kludgy,
starts a separate X server for bootup, then kills it and starts
another. The main advantage is that you gain real use of your mouse
during boot, though I'm not certain that this is a benefit.

To completely get rid of bootsplash instead of just disabling it, you
would probably have to rebuild your kernel.
