In /etc/modprobe.conf, do you have a line like:
alias char-major-195* nvidia ?
In a nutshell, the Standardware "nvidia" X driver will attempt to access
/dev/nvidia*. Those are major device 195. That line in modprobe.conf
will tell the kernel to load that driver for support for those character
device files.
